This article is based on a paper presented at International Conference on Divorce: Causes and consequences held in Beijing in July 2004 and sponsored by the International Society of Family Lawyers and China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing. There exists a common perception among both Muslims and others that the right to divorce rests solely in the hands of the husband. Which is often executed capriciously and to the wife's detriment. The purpose of this contribution is not necessarily to dispel this perception, but to cast some light on the extent to which this may be true.en_US
